
Panther Soccer Ties Valparaiso on the Road

VALPARAISO, Indiana – It was a hard-fought game for the Panthers, who came out of Valparaiso with a point in a 0-0 tie.
UNI would get the first shot on goal of the game early on in the 5th minute. Lauren Heinsch was able to find space on the right side and put a shot at the bottom center of the net that was saved by Valpo goalkeeper Nikki Coryell. The Panthers would get two other chances at the net, one in the 7th minute also from Heinsch to the bottom center, and one in the 12th minute from Sophia Doty off a corner kick set piece.
UNI would dominate in the midfield to keep play even in the first half. The Panthers also had a strong defensive showing with goalkeeper Chloe Russo making two key saves in the 28th and 37th minutes to head into halftime tied 0-0.
The Panthers had a quick start in the second half, getting two corner kicks back to back. UNI got their first shot of the half in the 64th minute when Kennedy Rieken put a shot on goal. Allison Whitaker would have a big play in the 75th minute when she broke up a Valpo breakaway to keep the Beacons from a shot. The Panthers would get another couple of shots on goal before ending full-time still scoreless with Valparaiso.
UNI would start the first overtime with two shots off of two-goal kicks from Doty and Lily Caso. The two teams would then trade shots until the end of the 1st overtime. The second overtime would begin with a shot from Ashley Harrington that was saved by Coryell. Russo would then make two quick saves in the 108th minute to give the Panthers the last chance at the net. Whitaker would take the last shot of the game in the 110th minute that would go wide right, giving UNI a 0-0 tie with the Beacons.
As a team, the Panthers led in corner kicks with 8 and had 13 shots with 9 shots on goal. Heinsch led the team offensively with 6 shots, 5 shots on goal, and 99 minutes played. Harrington and Doty also had multi-shot games for UNI. Goalkeeper Chloe Russo earned her second clean sheet of the week with 7 saves through 110 minutes of play.
