Ubben scores first goal of season on penalty shot in Panthers’ non-conference finale.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The UNI soccer team scored a dramatic first half equalizer off the foot of Ella Ubben in the first half, but would fall short in its final non-conference matchup of the 2026 season in a 2-1 loss to the St. Thomas Tommies on Thursday afternoon at the UNI Soccer Field.
Throughout a competitive and defensive match, St. Thomas would outshoot Northern Iowa by a 17-12 margin, despite a flurry of Panther opportunities and a season-high nine corner kicks.
Â
ÂHOW IT HAPPENED
UNI had scoring opportunities early, acquiring six corner kicks and three shots on goal in the first half. St. Thomas forward Izzy McEwan would break the scoreless tie in the 21st minute, connecting on a penalty kick to put the Tommies up 1-0. UNI would have its own scoring opportunity off a penalty kick in the 43rd minute on a foul drawn by Keira Bogott, with Ella Ubben finding the back of the net to even the score 1-1 for an even first half.
After 25 minutes of deadlocked action in the second period, Alexis Larson scored on a pass from Ana Oenning to give St. Thomas the lead early in the 71st minute of play, with the Tommies holding off a heavy push by the Panther offense late.
Allison Flies led UNI with four shot attempts in the match, with three shot attempts, including two on goal from Abi Roberts, while Kailey O'Brien and Ubben both added one shot attempt on goal each. Hailey Luedtke meanwhile would finish the day with three saves in goal for the Panthers.
