UNI Wrestling Opens Season Against Dakota Schools

No. 23 UNI opens the season with a pair of duals. The PantherTrain opens with a dual against South Dakota State at 2 p.m. at Frost Arena in Brookings before wrestling North Dakota State at 3:45 in a neutral-site dual also in Frost. The Jackrabbits and Bison are both 1-1 on the year after opening the season last weekend in Fargo. Both duals will be broadcast on Flo Wrestling.
• Eight Panthers are ranked in various polls, Jack Skudlarczyk and Carter Isley are ranked in every poll. Brody Teske, Austin Yant, Keegan Moore, Parker Keckeisenand Tyrell Gordon are all ranked in the Track Wrestling Poll. Jacob Holschlag is ranked in the Intermat poll and the Open Mat poll, but is not likely to see the mat in the near future.
• The Jackrabbits fell 33-9 to Missouri before earning a 20-12 win over SDSU. The only wins over Mzzou came at 133 and 197. No. 24 Zach Price (133) and No. 10 Tanner Sloan (197) are 2-0 on the year.
• Last weekend, NDSU picked up a 19-15 win over Oregon State at home before falling to No. 12 Missouri 38-3. No. 18 Kellyn March (133) was the only Bison Wrestler to go 2-0 and the only wrestler to pick up a win in the dual against Missouri. Six Bison Wrestlers are ranked in the TrackWrestling rankings.
•Three wrestlers in the lineup have qualified for nationals, but only transfer Keegan Moore has actually wrestled in the NCAA Championships. Jack Skudlarczyk and Carter Isley both qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships before it was canceled.
• As many as nine wrestlers will be in the lineup for the first time for the Panthers. UNI saw six wrestlers graduate, including four national qualifiers. National qualifier Michael Blockhus transferred during the offseason.
• Four wrestlers from Fort Dodge are expected to start for the Panthers this weekend. Brody Teske (125), Drew Bennett (141), Triston Lara (149) and Cayd Lara (157) are all in the lineup for UNI. It is believed that it is the first time that four wrestlers from the same high school were in the same lineup since 1949 when four Waterloo West wrestlers lined up for Cornell College.
• UNI is on the road for neutral site duals in Ames against Missouri and Arizona State next week. Before hosting its first home dual on Jan. 24 against Oklahoma. Iowa State will also wrestle the Sooners in Cedar Falls that day.
•UNI will only leave the state of Iowa twice for road duals. Sunday's duals in South Dakota and Feb. 5 in a dual against Northern Illinois.
