UNI wrestling tops Missouri in Big 12 dual action

Panthers improve to 2-0 in conference duals. UNI hosts North Carolina next Sunday afternoon

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The 15th-ranked UNI wrestling team scored bonus point victories and three matches, withstanding a late Missouri push for a 22-14 dual victory over the 14th-ranked Tigers on Sunday inside the McLeod Center in Big 12 Conference dual action.
Northern Iowa opened and closed the dual with bonus point wins with Wyatt Voelker securing UNI's third dual win of the year with a dominating technical fall at heavyweight. The Panthers have now won ten of their last 11 Big 12 duals and have beaten Missouri in three straight dual matchups for the first time in 23 seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trever Anderson got the Panthers rolling at 125 pounds in his match against No. 22 Mack Mauger. Following a scoreless first period, Anderson recorded a quick escape in the second period. After securing the takedown, Anderson took a 4-0 lead into the third period where he snagged another takedown and earned four additional backpoints. With an additional point for riding time, Anderson rolled to a 12–0 major decision victory, his first bonus point win of the year.
At 133 pounds Julian Farber faced No. 17 Kade Moore in a close match up. WIth a takedown right off the whistle, Farber took the lead. Moore escaped and took Farber down, adding three nearfall points with Farber escaping for a 7-4 deficit in the second period. Farber recorded the lone escape to open the second period, while Moore added an escape at the start of the third. Farber then finished a double leg takedown to even the score at 8-8 and maintained top control for the remainder of the match. With riding time secured, Farber earned a 9-8 victory.
Cory Land took on No. 21 Zeke Seltzer at 141 pounds. With a quick takedown to open the first period, Land took the lead with Seltzer then escaping. Land started on top in the second frame and rode Seltzer for the entire second period. Beginning the third on bottom, Land scored on an escape and remained strong defensively the rest of the way to secure a 5–1 decision.
After a pair of tightly contested losses for Ethan Basile at 149 pounds against No. 15 Josh Edmond, as well as RJ Weston at 157 pounds against No. 15 J Conway, Ryder Downey would emerge victorious with a narrow 1-0 win on a lone escape against No. 14 Max Mayfield for his eighth consecutive win of the year.
Jared Simma dominated Peyton Westpfhal at 174 pounds with a 12-0 major decision victory. Simma opened the scoring with a first-period takedown and added an escape to begin the second while continuing to push the pace. Following a scramble, Simma secured another takedown and added four nearfall points. With riding time secured, Simma closed the match with a 12 point shutout.
With CJ Walrath falling to No. 2 Aeoden Sinclair at 184 pounds in a 20-4 technical fall and a narrow 5-2 loss for John Gunderson at 197 pounds to No. 14 Evan Bates, the dual came down to the heavyweight bout between Voelker and No. 26 Jarrett Stoner. Voelker went on the attack early with two takedowns in the first period and added a third in the second frame. In the third, Voelker continued to attack with three additional takedowns, adding riding time for a 21-6 technical fall to secure the Northern Iowa victory.
I think we competed well today, said head coach Doug Schwab. We talk about fight and hustle and today we did that. This week we were a bit sharper with our training and energy and it put us in good shape.

The Panthers return to the mats next Sunday, Dec. 21 as they host the North Carolina Tar Heels in non-conference dual action. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT inside the McLeod Center with live coverage available on FloWrestling.
