GAME NOTES
Â
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI softball caps its home conference schedule with a series against the Southern Illinois Salukis this weekend.
The two teams will play on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28. On Saturday, a doubleheader will be played beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the UNI-Dome with the second game TBD, and then a single game is scheduled for Sunday (location/time TBD).
Last season, the Panthers dropped two out of three to Southern Illinois, on the road. In the all-time series between the two teams, UNI is 38-75 against the Salukis. In the last six games at home against SIU, the Panthers are 5-1.
Under head coach Ryan Jacobs, the Panthers are 13-16 when playing the Salukis. At home against SIU under Jacobs, the team is 7-7, but have enjoyed better success in those past six games.
Sammey Bunch enters the weekend with 28 career home runs. She is two home runs short of tying the UNI-career record for home runs (30), with seven games remaining in the regular season. Bunch has a league-leading 16 home runs in the 2019 season.
Ashley Chesser hopes her success from last weekend against Bradley, translates to the series against SIU. The three home runs against the Braves extended Chesser's career-high for home runs in a season, as she now has 11 in 2019.
Jaclyn Spencer struck out 19 batters in a little over 11 innings against Bradley this past weekend and picked up two pitching victories. Against Drake on Tuesday, she struck out seven batters in seven innings, while allowing one unearned run in the 1-0 loss. Spencer is now tied for the team lead with six pitching wins and has the lowest ERA on the team (2.47).
On Sunday, seniors Brittney and Courtney Krodinger, Claire Dudek and Brooke Craig will be honored as part of Senior Day. Ceremonies will take place as the players are thanked and congratulated on their successes as a UNI student-athlete.
This will be the final home series for the Panthers, but UNI is still slated for one more home game against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Tuesday, April 30 at 5:00 p.m., barring unforeseen weather conditions.
