CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The UNI men's golf team is set to start the spring season the second week in March.
The Panthers had competed in four tournaments this past fall and are scheduled to play in six tournaments this spring.
The men's golf team has lost their top performer from last spring in Sam DeBartolo, who placed 11th at the MVC Championships. With just one senior returning, the Panthers are a young team. Joining Dominic Schnepf are three juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen.
"We have some kids that have had a pretty good fall, and one that we will lean on is Sam Sacquitne, a junior from Decorah," said head coach John Bermel. "Sam played very well this past fall and has worked really hard on his game over the winter."
Sacquitne had the team's best average (74.33) through the fall season and the team's best individual score at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite, shooting a 214 (-2).
The Panthers also will look to sophomores Carter Stochl and Parker Oleson to lead UNI. New Hampton, Iowa, native Stochl competed in all four fall tournaments and averaged a 77.33. Â
"They have some experience and will need to step up," Bermel said.
UNI's freshmen are expected to make an impact early on their careers.
"Alex Pries and Tommy Doyle are a couple of freshmen who saw some playing time this fall, too," Bermel said. "Alex played really well and should be able to help out quite a bit while Tommy played some this fall and has worked extremely hard this winter."
Pries played in all four fall tournaments and had the team's second-best average, which was 75.67. Tommy Doyle saw action in two of the fall tournaments.
"We want to be able to compete and see how our team stacks up right away," Bermel said.
The Panthers open the spring season March 11-12 at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri.
The Panther men will be challenged at the difficult Twin Oaks Country Club, par 71, which stretches 6,700 yards.
The tournament is set for shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
