CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI softball split the final day of the 2019 Racer Classic, winning against Purdue Fort Wayne, 6-1, before falling to Samford, 6-5, in nine innings.
Northern Iowa vs. Purdue Fort Wayne | Final Score – W, 6-1
Emma Olejniczak was solid in her start for the Panthers as the sophomore went all seven innings for a complete game victory. Olejniczak walked only one batter and allowed five hits while striking out five. Only one run came around to score on Olejniczak, which is just the second time this season that Olejniczak has allowed one or fewer runs to score in a game.
Sammey Bunch has set a new career-high in home runs, as she smacked her team-leading sixth bomb to center field in the top of the seventh inning against Purdue Fort Wayne.
Adara Opiola collected two hits and drove in two runs for her first RBIs of the season. Opiola also walked once to go along with her second extra-base hit of the year. Claire Dudek and Tianna Drahn also chipped in with an RBI and a base hit a piece. Courtney Krodinger walked twice and scored two runs for the Panthers.
In the top of the third inning, Opiola drove a double into right field to score C. Krodinger and Olivia Brooks, and give UNI the early 2-0 lead.
After the Mastodons scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to one run, the Panthers rallied for a three-run inning to push the lead to four. C. Krodinger stole home and Dudek grounded out to short to drive in a run which made it a 4-1 game. Drahn fouled out to left field to bring home Ashley Chesser.
In the top of the seventh Bunch homered to center field to give UNI its sixth and final run, which was more than the team needed as they captured the 6-1 victory.
Northern Iowa vs. Samford | Final Score – L, 6-5 (9 inn.)
Hannah Kelley was the UNI starter for game two but lasted only an inning and a third. Kelley allowed four runs on six hits and one walk.
Brooke Craig came on in relief and allowed one run in four and two-thirds innings while striking out two. Erica Oler also pitched in relief, allowing the final run (unearned), and striking out two while not allowing a hit or walk in just over two innings of work.
The Bulldogs got out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings. In the top of the third, Brittney Krodinger homered to left field to cut the Samford lead in half. Opiola reached on a fielder's choice that scored Bunch and then B. Krodinger doubled in the top of the fourth to drive in Jenny Kohl and tie the game at four.
C. Krodinger was able to come around to score on a wild pitch and give UNI the 5-4 lead after four and a half innings.
