Softball Struggles in Rematch with Redhawks

Cedar Falls, Iowa – UNI softball split its two games on Saturday with a win, 9-4, over Saint Louis before falling to Southeast Missouri State, 16-0.
Northern Iowa vs. Saint Louis | Final Score – W, 9-4
Brooke Craig was the starting pitcher for UNI in its first game of the day. Craig went four innings while allowing two runs (both earned) and striking out one batter. Emma Olejniczak picked up a save in relief, while working three innings and striking out two. Olejniczak allowed two runs, but they were both unearned, and earned her second career save.
The Panthers trailed by one heading into the bottom of the first, before a Courtney Krodinger single up the middle allowed Sammey Bunch to race home. Both teams would be held scoreless until the bottom of the third when back-to-back sacrifice flies from C. Krodinger and Ashley Chesser gave UNI the 3-1 lead.
After allowing the Billikens to score a run in the top of the fourth inning, UNI erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame. Tianna Drahn led off with a single to third base but was forced out at second base. Claire Dudek singled up the middle, bringing up Brittney Krodinger with two runners on base. B. Krodinger doubled down the left field line and extended the Panthers' lead to 5-2.
Olivia Brooks singled into right field which brought home B. Krodinger. With runners on the corners, Brooks broke towards second base and stole it, successfully allowing Bunch to steal home. UNI would tack on one more run in the inning on a Chesser single to right.
Bunch homered to right center in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the Panther lead to 9-2. It was Bunch's second homer in as many days.
The Billikens would add two runs in the top of the seventh, but ultimately would strand two runners on, and fall, 9-4, to UNI.
Northern Iowa vs. Southeast Missouri State | Final Score – L, 16-0
Freshman pitcher Erica Oler got the starting nod for game two on Saturday but was pulled after allowing eight runs (three earned) on five walks and three hits. The rest of the UNI relievers also struggled and were unable to contain the SEMO offense.
The Panthers' offense failed to find the base path very often, with just four batters reaching base. B. Krodinger had two of UNI's four hits, with freshman Kelley collecting her first career hit in the second inning. Tianna Drahn also smacked a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth.
The last time the Panthers were shutout in a tournament in the UNI-Dome was in 2017 against the Wisconsin Badgers. UNI lost the game, 1-0, and it is just the second time in four years that they have been held scoreless in a UNI-Dome tournament matchup.

The Panthers cap off the 2019 UNI-Dome Classic with a matchup against the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10.
