UNI Softball Splits One Run Games on Saturday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI softball rallied for a comeback win over the College of Charleston, 6-5, before falling to the Ospreys of North Florida, 8-7, on Saturday.
Northern Iowa vs. College of Charleston | Final Score – W, 6-5
Brooke Craig started the game for the Panthers and pitched three solid innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Craig allowed five runs in the bottom of the fourth, four of which were unearned runs. Craig struck out one Cougar while walking three and giving up three base hits.
Erica Oler, a freshman for UNI, came on in relief of Craig and pitched three and a third innings while holding the Cougars scoreless. Oler picked up the victory, which marks the first career win for the freshman.
The Panthers scored first in the game, with a Courtney Krodinger single through the right side that drove home Sammey Bunch in the first inning. The game was stuck at a 1-0 score until the fourth when Charleston rallied for a five-run inning.
In the top of the sixth, down by four runs, the Panthers loaded the bases to bring up Brittney Krodinger. B. Krodinger was able to reach on a fielder's choice to drive home Tianna Drahn but left UNI with two outs in the inning. After a Bunch walk to load the bases, Olivia Brooks singled to the left side two bring home two and C. Krodinger followed with a two-run triple to give the Panthers the lead.
UNI held the Cougars scoreless for the final two innings to give the Panthers the comeback victory.
Northern Iowa vs. North Florida | Final Score – L, 8-7
The starting pitcher against the Ospreys was Emma Olejniczak. Olejniczak struggled and lasted only one inning, giving up five runs on six hits and one walk. She did not record a strikeout in her inning of work.
Hannah Kelley pitched in relief and allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings. Kelley did not record a strikeout either, while giving up seven hits and walking one batter.
The Ospreys dominated the game early, taking a 6-1 lead after the second inning. C. Krodinger tripled in a run in the top of the third that made the game 6-2.
After North Florida took a 7-2 lead, the Panthers scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Brooks singled into center to drive home Bunch and Chesser walked with the bases load to bring home another UNI runner.
The Panthers tacked on another run in the top of the sixth on a Bunch triple into the right center gap but were unable to bring her home for any more scoring in the inning.
The Panthers added two more runs in the seventh but were unable to complete their comeback. UNI has split all four of its doubleheaders this season.

The Panthers finish off their tournament in Jacksonville against the North Florida Ospreys on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 11:00 a.m.
