UNI Softball Splits Day One of Jacksonville Tournament

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI softball split their doubleheader on Friday, losing to the College of Charleston by a score of 4-0, before winning against Jacksonville University, 6-2.
Northern Iowa vs. College of Charleston | Final Score – L, 4-0
Hannah Kelley was called on to start for the Panthers and went five innings while striking out one batter. Kelley allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk.
In the sixth inning Kelley was pulled for Erica Oler, who pitched two innings of shutout ball while allowing no hits and walking one Cougar.
The offense for UNI was stagnant for most of the game as the Panthers managed only two hits through the first six innings. Brittney Krodinger and Kelley were the only UNI batters to reach base in those six innings.
In the bottom of the seventh Olivia Brooks and Courtney Krodinger led off with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no outs. The Panthers were unable to bring either runner around to score.
The shutout marks the second time that UNI has been held scoreless in the first six games of the season.

The starting pitcher against the Dolphins was Emma Olejniczak. The sophomore went seven strong innings while striking out five batters and allowing two runs (one earned). The start continues the phenomenal start to the season for Olejniczak, as she has only allowed three earned runs in 18 and a third innings to start the season.
In game two of Friday's doubleheader the Panthers had no trouble scoring early. After reaching by a hit by pitch, B. Krodinger scored on a Sammey Bunch triple into the gap. Brooks singled to the shortstop and Bunch scored on an error by the third baseman of the bat of C. Krodinger. Ashley Chesser lined a double into left center that allowed Brooks and C. Krodinger to score, and UNI would tack on one more in the inning on a Kamryn Shaffer sacrifice fly.
The Panthers led of the top of the third inning with two straight walks. After Claire Dudek reached on an error by the Jacksonville shortstop, UNI had the bases loaded with two outs. B. Krodinger followed with a single into left field to drive in Kelley.
UNI's offense was held scoreless through the final three innings. Olivia Brooks finished with three hits which gives her 11 on the season. Brooks has 32 hits in her last 22 games played.

The Panthers will kick off day two of the Osprey/Dolphin Invitational against the College of Charleston at 1:00 p.m., and matchup with the University of North Florida following the first game.
