UNI Softball Caps UNI-Dome Classic with 10-2 Win

Cedar Falls, Iowa – The Panthers cruised to a 10-2 win over the Jackrabbits on Sunday to close out the UNI-Dome Classic.

Northern Iowa vs. South Dakota State | Final Score – W, 10-2 (5 inn.)

Hannah Kelley got the starting nod for UNI and picked up the win in her first career pitching start. Kelley went all five innings for the Panthers while allowing two runs and one hit. Kelley struck out three batters, becoming the second UNI starter to strike out at least three batters in one game. Emma Olejniczak struck out four batters against the Toledo Rockets on Friday. The sole damage done to Kelley was a two-run home run in the top of the second inning.

Defensive miscues for the Jackrabbits allowed UNI to score early. After a hit by pitch and a walk, Hannah Kelley flied a ball to left field and after a misthrow to third base, Brittney Krodinger was able to race home and score. Ashley Chesser drove in Olivia Brooks on a ground-rule double to right center, and Courtney Krodinger singled to left and advanced two bases on an error by the left fielder, driving in Chesser and giving UNI the 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning Chesser connected with a pitch and drove it deep to right for a two-run home run. Tianna Drahn got in on the scoring-fest with a double down the left field line which allowed C. Krodinger to score. Jenny Kohl drove in her first run of the season on a single up the middle to score Drahn to push the Panthers' lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the fourth Sammey Bunch led off the inning with a line drive home run to straight center field. Drahn singled on a slap hit back to the pitcher for her second RBI of the game, and Emma Valainis walked with the bases loaded to score the tenth and final run for UNI.

UP NEXT –

The Panthers travel to Jacksonville, Florida to play five games over the course of the weekend February 15-17. UNI starts off the weekend slate with a matchup against the College of Charleston on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT.
