WATERLOO, IOWA – Olivia Fain and Thaissa Moreira overcame a 7-6 deficit to win the third flight doubles championship match 8-7 (7-5) over Illinois State's Elena Jankulovska and Ivon Mihaleva to lead the way for UNI in the final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Individual Championship.
The Panther team built a 4-3 lead before the Redbirds battled back for a 5-4 lead, but UNI responded down the stretch to force the tiebreaker. In the breaker, the Panthers took the first two points and built a 6-3 lead before Illinois State responded with two consecutive points.
UNI closed out the match on a long volley that ended when Fain made a difficult cross-court shot at the net, leaving the Illinois State player with an even harder shot. She attempted a return, but the ball hit the net a foot below the tape and dropped to clinch the win for UNI.
In other UNI matches, Fain fell in the third-place match of the seventh flight Madeline Doherty Doherty and Emma Carr dropped the fifth-place match in the second flight of the doubles competition.
The tournament closes the fall season for the Panthers. UNI returns to action for team competition in the spring.
