CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – The Panthers split their doubleheader Saturday against Loyola, winning game one, 8-0, before dropping game two, 5-0.
Northern Iowa Panthers vs. Loyola-Chicago Ramblers | Final Score – W, 8-0
Brooke Craig pitched six solid innings for UNI in her 16th start of the season. In her six innings of work, Craig struck out six Ramblers while allowing no runs on seven hits. The win marked number 11 for the righty, and it was the third complete game shutout of the season for Craig.
The entire lineup seemed to click in the first game, as every player in the starting lineup finished with a base hit. As a team, UNI scored its eight runs on 13 hits, three walks and a hit by pitch. However, the Panthers still left nine runners on base, which was their second consecutive game stranding nine runners.
Tianna Drahn, Sammey Bunch, Kennedy Bailey and Ashley Chesser all finished with multiple-hits. Chesser smacked her first home run of the season in the sixth inning, which was a no-doubter to the right field stands. Drahn and Claire Dudek both led the Panthers with two-RBI games.
UNI scored in bunches against Loyola pitching, as they drove in three in the bottom of the first inning, two in the fifth inning and three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to rout Loyola.
A Brittney Krodinger single, along with a fielder's choice RBI and bases-loaded walk, scored the first three runs of the game for UNI.
Claire Dudek drove in a pair in the third inning on a single through the left side. Adara Opiola easily scored, while Courtney Krodinger beat the throw home to give UNI the 5-0 lead.
A Brittney Roby RBI-single, along with Chesser's home run brought the lead to seven before Drahn slapped a bunt to first, allowing B. Krodinger to race home and give the Panthers the run-rule walk off game winner.
Northern Iowa Panthers vs. Loyola-Chicago Ramblers | Final Score – L, 5-0
The second game of the doubleheader was a struggle for the UNI offense.
Emma Olejniczak lasted five innings in her start on Saturday, giving up five earned runs on nine hits and a walk. The loss was Olejniczak's fourth of the season. C. Krodinger came on in relief, working two innings while holding the Ramblers' offense scoreless.
The UNI offense had nine hits, but also left seven runners on base against Loyola. Bunch and Roby had three and two hits respectively, but the five hits out of the top of the UNI lineup was not enough to create any runs.
The top three in the UNI batting order were 6-11, while the rest of the starters were a combined 1-16.
Olivia Brooks pinch hit for Opiola, and finished with two hits, as well as a stolen base.
