CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – UNI was able to get back into the win column on Friday, as the Panthers split their doubleheader against the Missouri State Bears.
Northern Iowa Panthers vs. Missouri State Bears | Final Score – L, 4-8
The defense failed to show up early in the opening game of the Panther's doubleheader Friday, as Jaclyn Spencer allowed seven runs in her start, none of them earned.
Spencer worked two innings while allowing four hits and striking out two batters. Emma Olejniczak came on in relief, working five innings while striking out four Bears and allowing one unearned run. UNI's defense committed four errors, which led to all eight Missouri State runs being unearned.
Brittney Roby and Ashley Chesser each finished with multi-hit games, with Roby driving in one runner and Chesser knocking in a pair of runs. Chesser also hit her first three-bagger of the season, in the first of Friday's two games.
A Kennedy Bailey single in the first inning brought home UNI's first run of the game. The rest of the Panther's runs came in the second and the third inning, on a Roby single up the middle, and a two-run triple off the bat of Chesser.
Northern Iowa Panthers vs. Missouri State Bears | Final Score – W, 5-0
UNI was able to end its recent losing streak in the finale of Friday's doubleheader, as the Panthers shutout the Bears, in a 5-0 winning effort.
Brooke Craig got the start, going six solid innings while allowing four hits and striking out one. Craig collected her team-leading ninth win of the season against Missouri State. Olejniczak closed the game for the Panthers, striking out two in her one inning of work.
There was no shortage of power for the Panthers on Friday, as Brittney Krodinger (two-run) and Spencer (solo) each hit a long-ball in the UNI win.
Chesser enjoyed a fine offensive doubleheader in Springfield, finishing with her second straight multi-hit game, while driving in a run and scoring one as well.
The Panthers are 4-3 this season in a game that a UNI batter hits a home run. It is the first game that a Panther has hit home run since B. Krodinger's round-tripper against UMKC on March 10.
