UNI Sluggish in Saturday Matchups
2/24/2018 9:03:00 PM | Softball
Tuscaloosa, Alabama – The Panthers continued their recent offensive woes, dropping Saturday's matchups against Georgia State, 9-1, and Alabama, 11-3.
UNI, on a five-game losing streak, has scored five runs in the first four games of the Easton Bama Bash.
Northern Iowa vs. Georgia State | Final Score – L, 9-1
Brooke Craig struggled in her start against the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday morning, lasting only two and a third innings while giving up 11 hits and six earned runs. Craig also failed to strike out a batter in her start. Emma Olejniczak came on in relief for UNI, going one and two-thirds innings, walking four batters and allowing one earned run. Courtney Krodinger came on late in the game and saw an inning on the mound, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk. C. Krodinger was the lone UNI pitcher to register a strikeout (one) in the game for the Panthers.
The Panthers have scored early, but not often, in the Bama Bash. C. Krodinger drove in Brittney Roby on a double over the leftfielder's head in the first inning. That would prove to be the only runs of the game for UNI, as they failed to score in the final four innings. UNI continued to struggle driving in runners, leaving six on base in the loss.
C. Krodinger and Claire Dudek both had multi-hit games for UNI, while Brittney Roby and Sammey Bunch finished with one hit. No other Panther batters recorded a hit against Georgia State.
Northern Iowa vs. Alabama | Final Score – L, 11-3
Jaclyn Spencer, making her seventh start of the season for the Panthers, struggled against the top-10 ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama.
Spencer went four innings and allowed eight runs to score on three walks and eight hits. After winning her first four starts to begin the season, Spencer has now lost three decisions in a row. Craig also pitched in the game, going one and two-thirds innings with two earned runs allowed.
The defense struggled behind the UNI pitchers in the game against Alabama, with four errors, three of which were committed by infielders.
Kennedy Bailey finished two for three in the game, while also tacking on two RBIs. Roby now leads the Panthers starters in at-bats (47) batting average (.468), after going four for ten in the first four games of the Bama Bash.
