LAS VEGAS – UNI wrestling advanced four Panthers to the semifinals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, and the team was sitting in fourth after the first day of competition.

Josh Alber, Bryce Steiert, Taylor Lujan and Drew Foster remain on the championship side of the bracket, while Max Thomsen and Carter Isley will battle for a shot at third place tomorrow.

All-American Drew Foster, who is seeded sixth, beat out native Iowan Max Lyon of Purdue to advance at 184 pounds. He followed it up by knocking off No. 3 seed Zack Zavatsky of Virginia Tech in a 9-6 decision. Zavatsky was sixth at last year's national championships.

In the semifinals, Foster will face Taylor Venz of Nebraska, who was fourth at last year's national championships.

At 141 pounds, Alber will face top-seeded Joseph McKenna, who was third at the 2018 NCAA national championships.

Steiret will face the No. 7 seed Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech at 165 pounds.

At 174 pounds, Lujan will be looking to avenge a close loss to his semifinal opponent, Daniel Lewis of Missouri. Lewis, who took fourth at last year's national championships, beat Lujan 13-10 in a dual last season.

All-American Thomsen, who opened his season today at the invite, was edged out in a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals to No. 5 seed Mitch Finesilver of Duke. He will be competing for a shot at third place tomorrow.

Heavyweight Carter Isley is still in the hunt for a medal. Falling in the first round, Isley battled back, with his final bout ending in a tiebreaker. He faces a Big 12 opponent in Brian Andrews of Wyoming tomorrow.

Jay Schwarm racked up a fall and tech fall on the day before being bumped from invite at 125 pounds. Izaak Shedenhelm lost his opening match at 197 pounds and finished 2-2 on the day.

Jack Skudlarczyk and Patrick Schoenfelder went 0-2 at 133 pounds and 157 pounds.

Many of the other remaining Panthers will be competing at the Jim Koch Open in Wisconsin at an open tournament tomorrow.
