Â
WATERLOO, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team used the first-half wind advantage to put three goals up early in a 3-0 shutout over Valparaiso.
Â
Sydney Hayden put the Panthers on the board first as she scored off Kezia Gesell's block in the eighth minute of action.
Â
Jordyn Rolli scored in the 17th minute of action, using the wind to sail the ball past Gesell.
Â
Hayden would strike again, this time assisted by Kelsey Yarrow, in the 25th minute to put UNI up by three at the half.
Â
It was a tale of two halves for the goalkeepers. In the first half, Gesell had two saves as the Panthers had three shots on goal. Jami Reichenberger, who had only two saves in the first half, faced 10 shots from the Crusader's offense in the second.
Â
The Crusaders totaled more shots than the Panthers at 17-9. Kelsey Jahn of Valparaiso received a yellow card in the 66th minute of action.
"We responded well to the windy conditions today and got off to a quick start with the early goal," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "The team executed the game plan and fought extremely hard for the win on senior day."Â
