Wells Named as Piesman Trophy Candidate

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI sophomore defensive lineman Brawntae Wells has been named a Piesman Trophy Award Candidate by national sports website SBNation.
You read that right. Piesman.
The award, which was created during the 2015 season, honors the top play by an offensive or defensive lineman "who do un-lineman-like things."
"More specifically, it's an award for the most impressive play in which an offensive or defensive linemen runs with, throws, or catches the ball. Any lineman from any level of college football is eligible for this honor," the Piesman website says.
Wells is one of seven current candidates and the only candidate from an FCS school. He earned the honor for his fumble recovery touchdown against South Dakota last Saturday in the DakotaDome.
Although the award itself is a tongue in cheek reference to the Heisman, it is an actual award, with an online award show that takes finalists to New York City the day before the Heisman Trophy presentation. The award itself is an acrylic slice of pie on a pedestal.
Last year's winner was Brock Riggs from Heidelberg University. Ashton Henderson of Southeastern Louisiana was the first winner in 2015 and Pitt's Brian O'Neill was honored in 2016.
The Piesman voters are national media members from across the spectrum of sports journalism, but there is a fan vote which will take place in the weeks before the award presentation.
