Defense Leads UNI to Victory at Bradley

PEORIA, Illinois – A strong one-two punch from junior Ellie Howell and sophomore Megan Maahs propelled the University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team (9-10, 5-3 MVC) to victory on Friday night, as the Panthers edged out Bradley (10-9, 4-4 MVC) on the road, 51-40.
The road victory for UNI was its first in the MVC this season, while the Panthers improved to 2-8 on the road overall.
Howell led all scorers on Friday night with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Maahs posted her eighth double-double of the season after scoring 10 points and snagging 14 rebounds. Howell and Maahs made all field goals for the Panthers in the fourth quarter, while combining to score 18 of UNI's 25 second-half points.
UNI dominated the paint, outscoring Bradley 34-18 while outrebounding the Braves, 41-32.The Panthers shot 40.8% from the floor, while holding the Braves to putrid 27.3%.
The Panthers led the game from almost start to finish, after going up midway through the first quarter thanks to six quick points by junior Mikaela Morgan who finished the game with that total. UNI took a six-point lead into halftime over Bradley, with a balanced attack on offense as the Panthers led, 26-20.
In the second half the Panthers kept repelling the Braves with a stingy defense, as UNI stretched its lead to seven points heading into the final period. Howell and Maahs combined for 14 of UNI's 16 points down the stretch as the Panthers squeezed the life out of the Braves to earn an 11-point victory on the road.
