CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team defeated the Drake Bulldogs at Robinson-Dresser Field on Tuesday, 5-2.

The Panthers completed a three-game season sweep of the Bulldogs. UNI extends its record to 27-17 overall and 15-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

UNI's Alyssa Buchanan went the distance in the circle and improved to 11-2 on the year. Buchanan struck out nine batters, while giving up only three hits and allowing two runs.

Drake kicked off the scoring in the top of the third when Megan Sowa came up to bat with Mandi Roemmich on second. Sowa hit an RBI double into left center to score Roemmich. Taryn Pena would single up the middle to advance Sowa to third before Kailee Smith grounded out to bring in Sowa and give Drake a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Brittney Krodinger reached on a single to right field. Brittney Roby replaced Krodinger on the base paths via a fielder's choice. Macey Wolfe followed with a walk. Ashley Chesser then drove in Roby with a single to center to cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1.
Drake's bats would be silent as Buchanan shut down the Bulldog batters and did not allow a hit the rest of the way.

Buchanan would lead off the bottom fo the fifth for UNI by singling to the left side. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Krodinger. Wolfe then evened the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to left. Chesser hit a shot down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw to third. Anna Varriano came through with a single to the pitcher that scored Wolfe and gave UNI a 3-2 lead.

UNI added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth when Sammey Bunch tripled down the right field line to score Brooke Craig. Buchanan put the finishing touches on the win with an RBI single up the middle to plate Bunch and give UNI a 5-2 lead.

Next up for the Panthers is the make-up game against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on Wednesday at 4 p.m. UNI will play a three-game series at home against Wichita State with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
