UNI Ends Day One of Louisville Tournament, 1-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team completed day one of the Louisville Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday with a 1-1 record.

Jaci Spencer was the Panthers (11-9) starting pitcher for UNI's first game of the day against Ohio University (13-4). Spencer held the Bobcats to zero runs and only one hit in the 8-0 Panther victory.

With bases loaded with the first three batters up to the plate in the bottom of the second for the Panthers, Spencer was able to get a walk in run for Alyssa Buchanan, against Ohio pitcher Danielle Stiene, for the first run of the game. The Bobcats swapped out pitchers and brought in Desirae Villanueva to try and stop the Panthers momentum, but to no prevail.

Courtney Krodinger was next at bat and grounded out to third base but was able to bring in Kennedy Bailey. After a wild pitch bu Villanueva, Spencer advanced to third base and Sammey Bunch made it in to home plate. Assistance from a hit into left field by Brittney Roby brought in Spencer to give the Panthers an early 4-0 lead.

Neither team saw action until the bottom of the sixth. Buchanan was at bat with Roby on first and two outs on the board. The situation was no threat to Buchanan as she hit a double into center field and brought home Roby. Once Anna Varriano was next at the plate with bases loaded, she was able to get walked to first and have Buchanan walk in for a run.

After an error by the Bobcats while Spencer was at bat, she reached first base while Bunch amd Bailey were both able to score and end the game 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth due to the mercy rule.

The second game for the Panthers was against Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (6-16).

IUPUI started off the top of the first by scoring three runs against starting pitcher Bailey Lange.

Brittney Krodinger answered back and reached home from a singled into left field by Roby. Unfortunately, that would be the only run for the Panthers, and would give IUPUI a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the second, bases would be loaded for IUPUI and UNI would change out Lange for Buchanan. The Jaguars would score an additional run from a sav fly into left field to bring their lead to 4-1.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth when UNI would see another run. Bunch led off with a triple and was brought home by a Varriano single into left field. That run helped close the Jaguars lead to 4-2.

The Jaguars would pull away in the fifth after scoring on a fielder's choice play. IUPUI would lead off the top of the sixth with a home run by Maggie Good to give them a 6-2 lead.

UNI made one final push after Macey Wolfe doubled into center field to bring in Tianna Drahn in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too late to catch up to the Jaguars. IUPUI took the 6-3 victory over the Panthers.

The Panthers game against Louisville on Saturday is canceled due to weather.

UNI will be back at play on Sunday to face off against Ohio University and Louisville at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respectively.
