LAS VEGAS – The University of Northern Iowa softball team faced a fierce battle against the University of Nevada Las Vegas, as it kicked off the DeMarini Classic.

The Panthers (4-2) fought hard against the Rebels (4-2) but ultimately fell short in their first game of the DeMarini Classic, 8-7.

In the first, UNI started off strong as Brittney Roby was the first to score on a throwing error by the UNLV catcher. Courtney Krodinger came around to score after an RBI hit to right field by Sammey Bunch. Bailey Lange hit a double into right field and brought Bunch home to help the Panthers reach a 3-0 lead.

The Rebels answered back and tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the first.

UNI was scoreless in the second, but came back to tally a trio of runs in the third. With Bunch on base, Lange came out swinging for the fences and was able to get the homer to bring her and Bunch home. Abby Downs ended the scoring in the third by coming home from a wild pitch to once again give the Panthers the lead.

Macey Wolfe scored in the top of the fourth for UNI's final run of the game.

The bottom of the fourth brought the Rebels ahead, and ultimately to victory, when they scored two more runs to bring their lead to 8-7.

Both teams were scoreless for the rest of the game.

The Panthers will continue their play at the DeMarini Classic when they take on two more teams on Friday. UNI will face off with Idaho State at 2:15 p.m. followed by Colorado State at 4:30 p.m.
