CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team (3-6) had a celebratory return home Sunday as the Panthers mauled UW-Parkside (4-9) by a score of 92-62 to bounce back into the winning column.
With the win, UNI snapped a four-game losing skid and improved to 3-6 on the season. UW-Parkside fell to 4-9 on the year.
UNI shot a season-high 50% from the floor to race past UW-Parkside on Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers had no trouble with the Rangers from the onset. The 92 points scored were a season-high as well for the Panthers, while the 11 made 3-pointers came three shy of a school record for a single game.
Freshman Nicole Kroeger led UNI with a career-high 19 points, while sophomore Megan Maahs scored 15 and junior Ellie Howell added 12 to round out the double-figure scorers.
The Panthers' hot streak began early in the first quarter, after UNI went on a 12-4 run to close out the opening period with a 26-13 advantage. Kroeger was to thank in large part for the scoring barrage, as the freshman earned nine points to outpace the Rangers.
UNI picked up where it left off in the first 10 minutes, as the Panthers drained 6-of-8 from beyond-the-arc in the second quarter to stretch its lead by 20. Kroeger and Howell led UNI with 15 and 10 at the break, as the Panthers continued their onslaught.
The Panthers didn't let their foot off the gas coming out of the locker room, as UNI earned another 20-point quarter to outscore the UWP 21-12 heading into the final period. UNI closed out the game coming just shy of another 20-point quarter as UNI poured in 19 to cap the final margin at 92-62.
