CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Propelled by a pair of 17-point performances from senior Kennedy Kirkpatrick and junior Ellie Howell, the Northern Iowa women's basketball team (1-1) defeated Iowa State (1-1) in thrilling fashion at home, 57-53.
The win for UNI was its first over ISU since 2002, as the victory snapped a 15-game streak for the Cyclones. ISU had a chance to win or tie the game with only 12 seconds remaining, but Megan Maahs pulled down her 13th rebound of the night on a contested shot to secure the Panther victory.
As a team, UNI held ISU to just 19-of-53 (35.8%) shooting on the night, while forcing 14 turnovers defensively. Kirkpatrick and Howell each drained a trio of 3-pointers, while going a blistering 6-of-11 and 7-of-16 from the field. Junior Taylor Hagen matched her career-high with 11 points to aid the Panthers.
The Panthers and Cyclones were neck and neck after the first quarter, with both teams putting up 15 points to start the action on Tuesday night. UNI began to pull away late in the second quarter as the veteran duo of Kirkpatrick and Howell combined to score seven points for the quarter as the Panthers took a five-point lead into halftime.
ISU would trim the margin to four after a 13-12 advantage in the third quarter. Bridget Carleton would pace the Cyclones with eight points, while Kirkpatrick would lead the Panthers with six for the quarter after burying a pair of treys to give UNI the 40-36 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
With only 6:48 remaining, the Panthers jumped out to a 49-40 lead following a Kirkpatrick 3-pointer and Howell layup. The Cyclones chipped away at the deficit and brought the score to 55-53 late, but a missed shot would be hauled in by Maahs who secured the rebound and UNI's impressive victory over a Power 5 team.
