9/28/2016 11:03:00 AM | Wrestling
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI wrestling team returns to the McLeod Center for the first time since 2009 for one dual in the 2016-17 season.
The Panthers will host Oklahoma in the McLeod Center Feb. 5. All other duals will be held in the West Gym.
For the first time since joining the MAC Championships, UNI wrestling is hosting the conference tournament. UNI officially joined the MAC with a full schedule of conference meets in 2014.
Season tickets are now available, and the schedule will have the most home events since the 2002-03 season when UNI hosted nine duals and the UNI Open tournament. This year the Panthers will host eight duals and the UNI Open tournament.
Fans can buy season tickets at UNIPanthers.com or call (319) 273-4849. The pass includes the UNI Open and the MAC Championships.
For three consecutive years, UNI wrestling has been ranked in the top-10 for attendance among all Division I schools. Last year, the Panthers ranked 10th in attendance.
Last year, UNI tied with Old Dominion for 25th place at the Division I NCAA National Championships. The Panthers were 4-10 in duals after being edged out by a point to Ohio and four points or less to top-25 teams No. 12 Virginia Tech and No. 16 Iowa State.
This year, UNI wrestling is ranked 18th by WIN's preseason rankings. Two-time All-American Dylan Peters leads the panthers in rankings.
All four ranked wrestlers competed in last year's NCAA tournament. Heavyweight JJ Everard, a senior transfer from South Dakota State, qualified for the 2015 NCAA Tournament while attending SDSU.
The Panthers open the home season with two duals Nov. 11 against Nebraska-Kearney at 5:45 p.m. and Utah Valley at 7:30 p.m. On Nov. 18, UNI hosts Virginia Tech, where Virginia Tech snuck by the Panthers last year.
