CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Following a delayed start to the 2025-26 season, the 14th ranked UNI wrestling team will get its first opportunity to compete beginning this weekend as the Panthers head to Tulsa for the inaugural National Duals Invitational, as well as the Grand View Open.
Competition in Tulsa will begin with the Panthers' first dual at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday morning with live coverage available on FloWrestling. Action at the Grand View Open will also begin at 9 a.m. CT with live streaming available on Rokfin and live results on FloWrestling.
The National Duals Invitational will feature 16 of the top wrestling programs in the nation in a multi-dual event, 15 of which are ranked in the NWCA's top-25 rankings. Teams competing include Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Lehigh, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Cornell, Illinois, Missouri, Little Rock, Wyoming and Arizona State. The full event bracket can be found HERE.
Northern Iowa's first dual of the event will be against No. 7 North Carolina State in the first dual between the programs since the 2023 Collegiate Duals in Nashville, won by the Wolfpack by a score of 25-16. UNI leads the all-time series with North Carolina State by a 3-2 margin and will be in search of its first win against the Wolfpack since the 1988-89 season. The Panthers will face either Oklahoma State or Cornell in their second dual of the competition.
UNI begins its 16th season under the leadership of head coach Doug Schwab, the reigning NWCA National and Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year. The Panthers were originally scheduled to open the season at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Pennsylvania last weekend, but were forced to withdraw due to travel complications.
Northern Iowa is coming off a 2024-25 season in which they won 14 duals, placed second at the Big 12 Championships and sent wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in all ten weight classes for the first time since 1986. UNI finished ninth overall at the national championships with two All-Americans in Parker Keckeisen and Cael Happel.
Nine members of this year's Panther squad bring experience competing at a Division I conference championship event and/or the NCAA Championships, including a pair of Big 12 champions in Wyatt Voelker (2025, 197 pounds) and Ryder Downey (2024, 157 pounds). Trever Anderson, Julian Farber, Jared Simma and Jack Thomsen have qualified for the NCAA Championships multiple times, with Caleb Rathjen bringing in Big Ten and NCAA Championship experience from his time at Iowa. Kyle Gollhofer and John Gunderson also have competed at the Big 12 Championships.
