Panthers Throw For Records At Wisconsin Twilight

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program wrapped up its regular season tonight at the Wisconsin Twilight, with the throws crew earning multiple spots on the UNI all-time list.
Justin Baker continued to set records for the Panthers, notching a new UNI record in the shot put with a toss of 63-6.25, ranking him No. 6 in the NCAA West Region. It is the fifth time this season that Baker has broken a school record, claiming the hammer throw record three times throughout the season and the shot put top-spot twice.
Following suit, Jamie Lindstrom threw for a huge personal-best in the women's competition, going for a mark of 50-9.25 to land her in the top-40 in the West and third all-time at UNI. Also earning a spot in the top-48 heading into this weekend was junior Jake Humpal, who placed third for the men with a PR throw of 58-1.75.
Moving into the hammer throw, Sarah Pate landed a career-best throw of 191-10.00 to finish second overall, second in UNI history and move her into the No. 33 spot in the NCAA West. Lindstrom also scored a season-best in the event, throwing for 186-6.00 to move her into the top-48 in the region for third place overall.
Pate moved her momentum into the discus competition, placing fourth overall, but gaining a key PR of 163-6.00, moving her up to No. 3 all-time at UNI and into the top-48 in the West. Chloe Schmidt added to the successful outing with a personal-best of 160-9.00, the fourth-best throw in school history.
Wrapping up a successful day in the field was a win by Shawn Koch in the triple jump, going for a leap of 48-2.00. Two-sport athlete Charles Brown also earned a season-best in the event, jumping a mark of 46-4.25 for third place.
The career-bests kept coming moving into the track events, with Amber Clock scoring a two-second PR in the 800 meters. She finished with a time of 2:06.94 to move into No. 3 as a Panther and No. 25 in the West. Ashley Norem also turned in a PR in the 800 meter run, coming across the finish line in fourth place overall and a time of 2:10.37.
On the men's side, Luke Johnston continued to put up faster times in the 800, earning a second place finish and a career-best of 1:49.88. Jordan Pingel kept up with the pace of the race, also giving the Panthers a third place finish in the race with a time of 1:50.11.
In the 3,000 meters, Tara Jackson picked up a win for the women, finishing the race in 10:17.81 for a career-best time. For the men's race, both Trai Bunch and Zach Buchheit added more PRs to the group, running the race in 8:41.35 and 8:43.42 to rank No. 4 and No. 5 all-time at UNI, respectively.
The wins kept coming for the Panthers moving into the shorter distances, with Rachel Peth, Jon Rus and Raheem Black winning the 100, 110 and 400 meter hurdles. Peth ran a time of 13.93 in the women's 100 meter hurdles while Rus's PR time of 14.01 in the men's 110 hurdles pushed him up to No. 24 in the NCAA West. Black also had a career-best time in his 400 meter hurdle win, coming in at 53.31.
Ending the meet, the men's 4X100 and 4X400 meter relay teams posted season-best times to rank in the top-three in the Valley. Brandon Carnes, Black, Evan Long and Tanner Dunkin ran a time of 40.49 in the 4X100 while Corey Hertz, Brett McCalla, Long and Austin Heitland finished in 3:11.53 in the 4X400.
The Panthers will return to action when they head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will take place May 13-15, hosted by Indiana State University.
