CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team dropped its doubleheader to Indiana State on a windy Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (24-11, 4-4 MVC) rallied to pull within a run in game one before falling 11-7. In game two, UNI committed five errors, allowing just six earned runs in a 11-2 contest.

Wind proved to be a factor for both teams in the first inning as the Sycamores plated four runs to open the ballgame.

Caitlin Wnek and the Panthers began to chip away at the lead as the senior hit a RBI double to score Micalla Rettinger from second base. Wnek brought the Panthers within one in the third inning, sending a two-run shot to right center field to bring the score to 4-3 with the Sycamores ahead.

The Sycamores would go on to score seven runs, beginning with a sacrifice bunt and a three-run homerun to put four on the board in the fifth before going up 11-3 in the top half of the sixth.

Kate Kinnetz hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for her first collegiate homer to break UNI's scoring drought. Brooke Craig got in on the action for her first home run at a Panther, recording a three-run shot after a pair of walks from Wnek and Kristin Lock to bring the final to 11-7.

The Panthers jumped out to a two run lead in the third inning after a Bailey Lange triple scored Kinnetz for the first run before Lange came across the plate on an illegal pitch to put UNI up 2-0.

Indiana State recovered and scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead. The Sycamores scored one in the fifth and three in the seventh to secure an 11-2 win.

The Panthers will take a break from Missouri Valley Conference play on Wednesday when they take on Iowa State at 4 p.m. in Cedar Falls.
