UNI in 6th After Day One at MVC Championship

CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa women's golf team is in sixth place following the completion of the first round of the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Sunday.
The Panthers are competing at the Harborside International Golf Center (Port Course) in Chicago, Ill. The team champion of the 54-hole tournament will advance to the NCAA Regional.
UNI posted an opening-round team score of 311 to place sixth on the opening day. The Panthers were pegged to finish eighth in the pre-tournament coaches poll. After day one, UNI is five shots out of third, four shots out of fourth and one shot out of fifth.
"We really hung in there and finished strong today," head coach John Bermel said. "I like that going into tomorrow."
UNI freshman Sarah McMichael picked a great time to score her lowest collegiate round with a 78. McMichael posted 12 pars and finished her round with a birdie on the par-5 No. 18. McMichael's previous low round of her career came when she scored 79 on two occasions this season (Redbird Invitational - Sept. 6; Little Rock/ASU Invitational - March 29).
Sonja Przybylski notched UNI's lowest opening round score with a 75 on Sunday. Przybylski had a three-over round that included birdies at No. 1 and No. 14. Her 75 was one off her season-low round of 74 at the Oral Roberts/SFA Spring Break Invitational on March 14. The Cedar Falls native is tied for ninth following the opening 18 holes of play.
Allison Rolinger matched McMichael's 78 and is also tied for 21st in the field. Rolinger recorded a birdie at the par-5 No. 9 hole and then eagled the par-5 No. 18 to close her round.
Maddie Bertsch rounded out the UNI scoring on day with an 80. Bertsch finished her round strong with birdies on two of her final three holes. Bertsch notched a birdie on the par-4 No. 16, and then knocked in another birdie on the par-5 No. 18. Bertsch is tied for 32nd in the tournament.
UNI's Paige Van Dyk shot an 85 in the opening round that included a birdie at No. 18. Van Dyk is tied for 44th after day one.
Round two will commence Monday morning.
