Panthers Push Past The Shockers, 69-48

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team pushed past the Wichita State Shockers on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 69-48 win. UNI improved to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in MVC play.
Madison Weekly scored a game-high 19 points, putting her over the 1,000 career-point mark. Sharnae Lamar scored double-figures in back-to-back games, adding 11 against the Shockers. Amber Sorenson rounded out UNI's double-digit scorers, chipping in 10 points.
Wichita State led the Panthers during the entire first quarter, but UNI was able to make it a one-point game after Jen Keitel hit two free throws with 31 seconds on the clock. The Shockers headed into the second quarter with a 16-15 advantage after shooting 54-percent from the field and 50-percent from the arc in the first.
UNI went on a 14-0 run in the second quarter to take its first lead of the game, making it 29-19 that included four consecutive three pointers from Stephanie Davison, Weekly and Sorenson. During UNI's run, UNI forced Wichita State to four turnovers and a six minute scoring drought.
The Panthers headed into halftime leading the Shockers 35-23, forcing Wichita State to six turnovers in the final five minutes of the quarter. UNI ended the half on another run in the final two minutes, scoring six unanswered points, capped off by two free throws from Lamar.
After leading by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, Wichita State went 3-for-3 from the field to cut it down to an 11-point game, but Weekly answered with another three-pointer to make it 45-31 with 4:22 on the clock. The Panthers turned it into a 12-0 run that included a floating jumper from Lamar at the third quarter buzzer to send UNI into the fourth quarter with a 54-31 lead.
Despite going on a scoring drought for over three minutes and a 6-0 run by the Shockers, UNI still held a 21-point lead with 3:59 left in the game, with a layup from Alyssa Johnson making it 62-41. The Panthers struggled from the field in the fourth quarter, but thanks to big runs in the third, UNI came away with its 69-48 win.
The Panthers will return to action when they hit the road for a pair of games against Indiana State and Illinois State. UNI will take on the Sycamores on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. and the Redbirds on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.

- Junior Madison Weekly needed just one-point to break the 1,000 career-point mark heading into today's game. She knocked in 19, becoming the 22nd player in UNI history to reach 1,000 points.
- Madison Weekly hit five three-pointers against the Shockers, moving her into sixth all-time in career threes made with 155. Amber Sorenson also moved up a spot on the all-time list for career threes, taking over fourth all-time with 201.
- Sharnae Lamar scored in double figures for the second consecutive game, scoring 11 points against Wichita State. She finished the game with a career-high three treys.
- The Panthers had 12 players see action against Wichita State, with 10 scoring at least one point. True freshman Dariann Garrison-Nickerson scored her first collegiate point and first rebound against Wichita State.
