Baker Scores PR In Shot Put; Punches Ticket To Eugene

AUSTIN, Texas – Senior thrower Justin Baker punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. today after a standout performance in the shot put competition.
The Sioux City, Iowa native needed to finish in the top-12 to advance to Eugene in the event. Baker threw a huge personal-best of 61-6.75 on his third attempt to claim seventh place overall and secure his spot at the championships. His mark also kept him ranked No. 2 all-time at UNI.
Baker also competed in the hammer throw during today's outing at the NCAA West Regional, placing 16th out of 48 competitors. Baker finished with a solid mark of 202-4.00 in flight two of the competition.
"I'm really impressed with the way our athletes are competing," head coach Dan Steele said. "Justin proved today that he is one of the best athletes in America. I look forward to seeing who else will be joining him in Eugene."
Sebastian Barth continued his strong senior campaign in the 110 meter hurdles, qualifying for tomorrow's quarterfinal race. Barth finished third in his heat to grab an automatic spot in tomorrow's competition, finishing with a time of 13.99.
Also advancing to tomorrow's quarterfinals is Brandon Carnes, who turned in another fast performance in the 200 meter dash. The sophomore finished first in his heat with a time of 20.72 to qualify him to the next round.
In the 100 meter dash quarterfinals, Carnes was able to finish with a time of 10.32 in his heat. He placed 17th overall out of 48 athletes in the competition.
Libby Torresani closed out her career as a Panther in the women's pole vault, finishing with a mark of 12-7.25. Torresani, one of the most decorated pole vaulters in UNI history, finishes her collegiate career as the school record holder in the indoor and outdoor pole vault and as a four-time All-Conference honoree.
Chaley Rath, the school record holder in the high jump, put up a strong effort in the women's high jump to close out the day in the field. Rath finished the competition with a height of 5-8.00.
UNI will return to action tomorrow for the final day at the NCAA West Regional. The Panthers will start their day with the women's shot put at 6 p.m. Live results are available throughout the day and a live stream will start at noon.
