CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa's women swimming and diving team opened up its home season this afternoon by playing host to the Nebraska Huskers.
The Panthers fell to the Huskers, 150-88, but posted strong performances from Molly Lembezeder, Allie Bey, Rachel Siebenaller and freshman Madison Rinaldi. The Huskers now hold a 7-0 all-time record against the Panthers.
Lembezeder was UNI's sole winner, taking place in the 50 freestyle and second place in the 100 freestyle. Lembezeder swam a 24.12, edging out her runner-up Alex Bilunas of Nebraska, in the 50 freestyle. Lembezeder fell half a second short of first place in the 100 freestyle, swimming a 52.02.
Siebenaller kept consistent with performances already this season, getting into the second place spot in the 1,000 freestyle, 500 freestyle and anchoring the Panther team of Lembezeder, Crystal Florman and Autumn Roepsch in the 200 freestyle relay. The relay swam a time of 1:37.07, just a second short of Nebraska's team. Siebenaller swam a time of 5:14.17 in the 500 freestyle and a time of 10:37.48 in the 1,000 freestyle.
Rinaldi is giving fans a taste of what is to come in the future. Rinaldi swam a 2:09.02 in the 200 Backstroke, sliding into second place. Rinaldi also led the Panther team of Veronica Herrmann, Taylor Ostrowski and Roepsch into third place in the 200 medley relay. The group swam a time of 1:49.21, just shy of second place.
MVC Diver of the Week, Allie Bey, also had a strong performance in the meet against Nebraska. Bey took second place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 259.27 and 248.55 respectively.
"Even though it's tough competition, it's competition we need to go against," said head coach Doug Humphrey. "The girls are pushing each other and we are gaining progress across the board."
The Panthers return to the pool 5 p.m. Nov. 6 to host Iowa Central and Loras.
