Shuttle Hurdle Relay Highlights Final Day of Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa track & field team earned three top-eight finishes on Saturday at the 102nd Drake Relays, as the men's shuttle hurdle relay team led the way with a third-place finish.
The UNI quartet of Chris Henely, Ryan Newtoff, Scott Lynn and Channing Puls clocked the fastest time in the prelims of the men's 4x110m shuttle hurdle relay, qualifying for the finals in 58.73 seconds. That time was the fourth-fastest in UNI history, but the Panthers proceeded to run even faster in the finals, clocking in at 58.21 for third place.
The third-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay gave the Panthers their highest finish of the 2011 Drake Relays.
Junior Aaron Stockstell used a strong finishing kick to record his fastest 800m time of the season, taking fifth place in 1:50.15. Stockstell leads the Missouri Valley Conference with that time.
UNI claimed seventh place in the men's distance medley relay, with the team of Brady Fritz, Josh Madsen, Justin Bartels and Thibault Vandenabeele finishing in 9:53.58.
Junior Travis Leuer matched his season-best in the high jump, finishing in 11th place with a clearance of 6-08.75 (2.05m).
In the discus, sophomore Jordan Williams threw 156-00 (47.56m) for 20th place. Senior Allen Weeks took 24th with a throw of 148-06 (45.26m).
Former UNI runner Shayla Houlihan dominated the women's 3,000m steeplechase, winning in a time of 10:19.68. Former NCAA national champion and current UNI assistant coach Jacob Pauli cleared 18-01.25 (5.52m) to take fifth in the men's special invitational pole vault.
UNI will host the Messersmith Invitational on May 6 as a final tune-up for the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships in Cedar Falls May 13-15.
