
Second Half Surge Sends Panthers Past Shockers, 77-57

Five Panthers (16-5, 9-1 MVC) scored in double figures, led by 19 points from K.K. Armstrong tallied 10 points for UNI. Boeck led UNI with eight rebounds, and Kirschbaum collected seven. Boeck and Erin Brocka each dished out three assists, and Boeck and Armstrong each grabbed three steals.
Morgan Boyd led WSU (10-11, 4-6 MVC) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Jessica Diamond scored 11 points for the Shockers.
The teams traded leads six times and were locked in 10 ties through the first half, including at 27-27 with 3:35 on the clock. Armstrong drove through traffic for a layup that gave the Panthers a two-point edge, and Kalin knocked down a mid-range jumper to extend the UNI lead to four with 30 seconds on the clock.
Brocka stole the Shockers' ensuing in-bounds pass, and Boeck was fouled as she grabbed an offensive rebound with 2.1 seconds on the clock. With UNI in the bonus, she made the first of two free throws to send UNI into the break leading, 32-27.
UNI continued the run in the second half, with Kalin and Boeck scoring on UNI's first two possessions of the period.
WSU answered with seven straight points to trim the UNI lead to 36-34 with 16:09 remaining.
Boeck made a free throw, and Katelin Oney hit a three from the left baseline to give the Panthers a 40-34 lead, but Morgan Boyd answered with a three for the Shockers to cut the UNI lead in half, 40-37 with 14:40 remaining.
WSU trimmed the UNI lead to one, 40-39, but Rachel Madrigal made a layup to extend the UNI lead to 42-39. A free throw from WSU's Alicia Sanchez cut the Panther advantage to a pair, 42-40. Boeck came up with a steal, and Armstrong found Madrigal cutting to the basket on the fast break. She was fouled as she scored the layup, and the free throw put UNI in front 45-40.
Chyna Turner scored at the other end, but Oney knocked down a three, and Armstrong came up with a steal and connected with Madrigal on the fast break again to give UNI a 50-42 advantage.
Armstrong came up with her third steal of the game, and Madrigal was fouled as she attempted a layup. She made one of two free throws to give UNI their ninth point in just over a minute and a 51-42 lead.
After a Shocker basket cut UNI's lead to seven, Madrigal converted another three-point play to give UNI its first double-digit lead, 54-44 with 11:03 to play.
Jazimen Gordon made a free throw to cut the Shocker deficit to nine, but a basket from Erin Brocka, a pair of free throws from Mercedees Morgan and a layup from Oney gave UNI a 6-0 run and a 60-45 lead with 8:43 to play.
The Panther lead stayed between 12 and 15 points until Oney hit her third three of the game to give UNI a 68-52 advantage. That was the start of a 9-0 run by UNI that put UNI in front 74-52 lead with 4:34 left.
The Panthers would hold at least a 19-point lead the rest of the way to the win.
UNI shot 28-of-53 (52.8 percent) from the floor, including 15-of-25 (60 percent) in the second half. The Panthers were 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from three-point range and 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
WSU finished 17-of-54 (31.5 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from three-point range. The Shockers were 17-of-25 (68.0 percent) from the free-throw line.
UNI committed 16 turnovers resulting in seven points for the Shockers. The Panthers converted WSU's 18 turnovers into 15 points.
The Shockers held a slight 38-37 edge on the glass.
