Panthers Pick Up 10th Straight Win With 60-52 Victory Over Creighton

UNI (18-5, 11-1 MVC) trailed by eight points early in the first half, but a late run gave UNI a one-point halftime advantage. The Panthers held Creighton (15-8, 9-3 MVC) to just three points through the first eight minutes of the second half, building a double-digit lead and never trailing from that point.
K.K. Armstrong came off the bench to shoot 6-of-8 from the floor and score 15 points for the Panthers, and Jacqui Kalin was 12-of-12 from the free-throw line on the way to scoring 15 points for UNI. Rachel Madrigal and Lizzie Boeck each notched double-doubles for the Panthers. They both scored 13 points, and Madrigal collected 11 rebounds while Boeck grabbed 10.
Carli Tritz led Creighton with 18 points.
The Panthers scored first, but a 12-2 run by Creighton gave the Bluejays a 12-4 lead with 14:38 left in the first half.
UNI chipped away at the Bluejay advantage, and at 3:39 Madrigal hit a three to pull UNI within a pair, 25-23. She scored on a putback on UNI's next possession to tie the game.
Ally Jensen hit a three for CU, but Kalin hit a pair of free throws with a minute on the clock to cut the UNI deficit to one.
Boeck scored on a putback with 22 seconds left in the first half to give UNI its first lead since 2-0 and a 29-28 advantage at the break.
Tritz scored on Creighton's first possession of the second half, but the UNI defense forced four turnovers and allowed just one offensive rebound over the next 6:20 to go on a 14-0 run and build a 43-30 lead with 13:23 to play.
Alyssa Kamphaus made one of two free throws to end CU's scoring drought, but Kalin answered with a pair of free throws to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 45-31 with 12:02 on the clock.
Creighton scored the game's next six points to trim the UNI lead to eight. Armstrong and Tritz traded layups, and at 6:35 Tritz made a pair of free throws to pull CU with in six, 47-41.
Madrigal scored on a layup off an assist from Kalin to put the UNI advantage back to eight, but Schuett converted a pair of free throws with 4:52 remaining to cut the Bluejay deficit back to six, 49-43.
Boeck hit a three off an assist from Armstrong to give the Panthers a nine-point cushion.
Tritz made a pair of layups, the second at 1:51 to pull the Jays within five, 52-47.
Kalin converted a pair of free throws and Madrigal scored off an assist from Erin Brocka to extend the UNI lead to nine, 56-47 with 1:11 remaining.
Kalin hit a pair of free throws with 34 seconds left to return the UNI lead to double digits, 58-47.
Sarah Nelson hit a three and Kelsey Woodard scored on a layup to pull CU within six with 14 seconds to play.
Kalin knocked down a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to bring the final score to 60-52 in favor of UNI.
The Panthers shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the floor, including 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers were 14-of-15 (93.3 percent) from the free-throw line.
Creighton shot 20-of-56 (35.7 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from three-point range. The Jays were 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the free throw line.
UNI committed 12 turnovers in the game, resulting in 15 points for CU. Creighton committed 10 turnovers, nine in the second half, which the Panthers converted into six points.
The Panthers held a 40-31 rebounding advantage. UNI scored eight second-chance points on eight offensive rebounds, while the Bluejays turned their eight offensive rebounds into 12 points.
UNI returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Drake at 3 p.m.
