Fourteen Panthers place at Cobber Open

MOORHEAD, MINN. - Fourteen of UNI's seventeen competitors placed in the upper division at Saturday's Finn Grinaker Cobber Open. Three of those places were championships as Ryan Jauch (133), Tanner Hiatt (149) and Ryan Loder (184) took home first-place finishes for their respective weight classes.
The Panthers ended the tournament with a combined record of 50-18 in the upper "Gold Division." Beside UNI's three first-place finishes, Clay Welter (149) and David Bonin (157) earned runner-up honors, while Adam Perrin (141), Riley Banach (165) and Taylor Kettman (197) racked up third-place finishes.
Jauch posted a 3-0 record on his way to the 133-pound championship, defeating St. Cloud State's Zach Stewart with a 3-1 decision in the final. The junior improved his overall record this season to 6-1.
Hiatt, a true freshman, defeated redshirt freshman and teammate Welter to capture the 149-pound title. He won that match with a 7-1 decision and finished 3-0 on the day, wrestling unattached.
Loder continued his early-season dominance, compiling two technical falls, a major decision, and a pin on his way to the 184-pound title. The sophomore's final fall came in his final match, as he pinned North Dakota State's MacKain Stoll in 3:47. Loder improved his season record to 8-0.
Saturday's Cobber Open marked the final open tournament before UNI's dual season commences. The Panthers will be back in action Sat., Nov. 26, at the Northeast Duals in Albany, N.Y.
