
Panthers finish 1-2 at the Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team ended its run at the 2011 Northeast Duals with a 1-2 record. The Panthers fell to No. 21 Central Michigan and No. 12 Maryland and defeated Bucknell. Saturday's competition was UNI's first action of the 2011-12 dual season.
Sophomore Ryan Loder (184) was the lone Panther to go undefeated. One of Loder's three wins came against No. 9-ranked Ben Bennett. Loder improved his overall season record to 11-0.
UNI competed in its first two duals without a 174-pound representative.
CENTRAL MICHIGAN 31, NORTHERN IOWA 6
No. 21 Central Michigan (3-0) topped the Panthers (0-1) by a score of 31-6 during the day's first round of duals. The Chippewas scored one major decision as Scott Mattingly (141) defeated redshirt freshman Seth Noble 10-1. UNI's David Bonin, ranked No. 19 at 157, suffered a minor upset in his match versus CMU's Donnie Corby, who is ranked No. 20. Corby pinned Bonin in 5:13.
The Panthers' two wins came via junior Ryan Jauch (133) and Loder (184). Jauch defeated Christian Cullinan with a 6-2 decision. Loder proved his No. 7 rank at 184 pounds, topping Ben Bennett, who is ranked No. 9, with a 3-1 decision.

MARYLAND 37, NORTHERN IOWA 6
The 12th-ranked Maryland Terrapins (5-0) also held UNI (0-2) to six points, defeating the Panthers 37-6. Six of Maryland's eight individual victories resulted in either major decisions or falls. Bonin (157) faced his second ranked opponent of the day, No. 16 Kyle John, and lost by major decision 11-1. The next match, Terrapins' top-ranked wrestler, No. 2 John Asper (165), scored 24 unanswered points to defeat UNI's Riley Banch with a technical fall.
Loder (184) provided all six Panther points during the dual as he pinned Ty Snook in 6:08.

UNI ended its day with its first win of the dual season. The Panthers (1-2) defeated Bucknell (0-4) by a score of 27-12.
Victorious Panthers included Jauch (133), Noble (141), Bonin (157), Banach (165), Loder (184), Kettman (197) and Beale (285). Noble, Banach and Loder won their matches with major decisions, and Beale pinned his opponent, Joe Stolfi, in 3:20.
Each of UNI's three individual losses resulted from decisions.

UNI wrestling's 2011-12 campaign will continue next Saturday with its first home competition of the season. The Panthers are set to host the UNI Open Dec. 3.
