EUGENE, Ore. – University of Northern Iowa sophomore Olimpia Nowak finished 11th overall in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday evening.
“I am very excited and proud of Olimpia,” UNI head coach Dan Steele said. “She set a big personal best score at a big meet. Her last two events were personal bests and she really put it out there going into those events. That's how a coach wants all the kids to compete. With her doing such a great job and it being her first time at the outdoor championships, I can only believe it is going to pay big dividends in the next two seasons.”
Nowak, who entered with tied with the 23rd-best score, racked up a career-best 5,415 points through seven events, capped by career-best performances in the javelin and 800 meter run to finish in 11th place.
Nowak opened the day leaping 18-01 in the long jump. The sophomore then heaved 116-06 in the javelin followed by an 800 meter run of 2:14.96, nearly four seconds better than her previous career-best.
Nowak wraps up the competition for the Panthers at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Nowak's finish is the highest finish for a Panther women's athlete in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships.
