
Panthers Open MVC Championship in Third Place

Newburgh, Ind. -- The University of Northern Iowa women's golf team jumped out to a strong start at the 2010 State Farm MVC Championship in Newburgh, Ind., holding third place after the first 18 holes. UNI posted a team total of 313 on the first of three days at Rolling Hills Country Club, currently good enough for third place behind Drake (306) and Illinois State (307).
The Panthers, slated for seventh in a pre-championship poll of the league's coaches, are one stroke ahead of Missouri State and two strokes in front of Wichita State.
Sophomore Ann Arnason also posted sub-80 rounds, shooting 77 and 79, respectively.
Brittany Atterbury carded an 81 and Abby Bermel shot 85 to round out the UNI contingent.
Drake has a one-shot lead over two-time defending champion Illinois State after the first 18 holes. Drake's Olivia Lansing, last year's runner-up finisher and 2008 medalist, is tied with Illinois State's Laura Harris with an even-par 72.
The second round will start at 9:30 a.m. Monday, with the third and final round to follow on Tuesday.
