Panther Rally Falls Short in 75-64 Loss at No. 13 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team cut a 19-point halftime deficit down to five but could not get any closer in a 75-64 loss at No. 13 Iowa Wednesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Panthers trailed the Hawkeyes 48-29 at the half, but opened the second half with an 18-4 run to cut the
Jacqui Kalin led UNI (7-4) with 18 points, and Lizzie Boeck added 11. Erin Brocka finished with seven points and 10 rebounds for UNI.
Jaime Printy led
Iowa built an early 12-6 lead, but Amber Kirschbaum scored UNI's next eight points to help the Panthers go on an 8-2 run and tie the game 14-14 with 11:45 left in the first half.
Mercedees Morgan hit her second three of the game to make it a six-point game, 31-25, but Iowa ended the half on a 17-4 run to take a 48-29 lead into the break.
Boeck scored the first five points of the second half to trim the Panther deficit to 48-34. After a jumper from Printy stretched the
Erin Brocka hit a three from the left baseline to make it a 10-point game, 50-40. Kalli Hansen brought the Hawkeye lead back to a dozen, 52-40, but Kalin hit a short jumper and a three from the top of the key to pull the Panthers within single digits. A basket from Rachel Madrigal cut UNI's deficit to five, 52-47, but
Morgan converted a pair of free throws, and Kalin hit a three from the right wing to pull UNI back within six, 58-52 with 11 minutes to play.
The Hawkeyes scored the game's next four points to stretch its lead back to double digits, 70-60. K.K. Armstrong made a layup, and then Rachel Madrigal collected a steal that resulted in a fast-break layup from Armstrong to cut the Panther deficit to six, 70-64 with 1:23 on the clock.
Printy hit a three with just over a minute remaining to make it a three-possession game with just more than a minute remaining. The Panthers came up empty-handed on their final two trips, and Kelsey Cermak scored with 22 seconds remaining to bring the final score to 75-64.
UNI shot 21-of-55 (38.2 percent) from the floor, including 7-of-18 (38.98 percent) from three-point range. The panthers were 15-of-16 (93.8 percent) from the free-throw line.
