
Kalin Paces Panthers to 85-68 Win Over Indiana State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – University of Northern Iowa sophomore Jacqui Kalin scored 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds, both career highs, to lead the Panther women's basketball team to an 85-68 win over Indiana State in Missouri Valley Conference action Saturday afternoon in the McLeod Center. The teams were tied going into the half, but UNI (8-12, 4-5 MVC) outscored the Sycamores 50-33 in the second half to earn the win.
Kalin's career effort came on 11-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-9 from behind the arc. She tallied 24 of her points in the second half. Kim Wypiszynski used 11-of-11 free-throw shooting to finish with 13 points.
Deja Maddox led ISU (11-9, 2-7 MVC) with 20 points and four rebounds. Brittany Schoen and Kelsey Luna each tallied 12 points for the Sycamores.
Neither team led by more than six points until Mattox hit a three to give Indiana State a 31-24 lead with 5:41 left in the first half.
Nicole Clausen knocked down a jumper. Clausen found Lizzie Boeck cutting to the basket, and her layup capped a 7-0 run that tied the game, 31-31 with 4:10 on the clock. Brittany Schoen connected for three to give the Sycamores a 34-31 advantage, but the Panthers scored the next four points to take a 35-34 lead. A free throw from Laurence Rivest with three seconds left sent the teams into the break tied at 35-35.
Trailing 45-44 in the second half, Wypiszynski converted a three-point play to put UNI back in front. After grabbing a defensive board, Kalin connected on a layup and free throw to put the Panthers in the lead, 50-45 with 14:52 to play.
Luna turned in her own three-point play to cut the Panther lead to two, but K.K. Armstrong took a charge to give the ball back to the Panthers. Brocka knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line to put the Panthers in front, 57-48.
Luna scored on a layup to end the UNI run, but Kalin drained her third three of the game to give UNI its first double-digit lead of the game, 60-50. She connected from behind the arc on the left side on UNI's next trip down to put UNI in front, 63-50 with 11:35 remaining.
Taylor Whitley made a jumper to bring the score to 63-52, but the Panthers scored nine straight points, including a three from Armstrong at 8:56 that made the score 72-52 in favor of UNI.
Indiana State was able to trim the Panther lead to 12, 77-65 with 3:39 left, but the Panthers outscored the Sycamores 8-3 the rest of the way to claim the victory.
UNI shot 24-of-56 (42.9 percent) from the floor, including 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) from three-point range. UNI shot 27-of-28 (96.4 percent) from the free-throw line.
Indiana State shot 26-of-52 (50 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-16 (50 percent) from behind the arc. The Sycamores finished 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Panthers committed 11 turnovers in the game, just three in the second half, which Indiana State turned into 14 points. UNI turned ISU's 15 turnovers into 18 points. The Panthers outrebounded ISU, 38-24, and used 12 offensive rebounds to score 14 second-chance points. UNI held Indiana State to four offensive rebounds and just two second-chance points.
The Panthers return to action on Friday when they play at Southern Illinois.
