
Panthers Top South Dakota; Fall to Kansas

The UNI swimming and diving team split duals against Kansas and South Dakota. The Panthers beat South Dakota (171-115) and fell short to Kansas (174-108).
Top performance came from the 200 freestyle medley relay team. Maggie Rickert, Jean Matzen and Abby Girard combined forces to finish in 1:41.40, good enough for a first-place finish.
The 400 medley relay team of A. Girard, Josie Itzen, Rickert and Frederick took third with a time of 4:09.61.
In the 1,000 freestyle, Chelsea Hartman swam for a time of 10:37.60. She took the runner-up shot for the event, behind South Dakota's Elizabeth Hoffman (10:31.38).
Kelly Mateas and Shea Brunsvold finished with times of 2:03.20 and 2:03.34, respectively.
Abby Girard took third in the 100 backstroke. She finished in 1:00.85. Teammate Jody Petersen followed closely behind with a fifth place finish at 1:04.29.
With a time of 1:11.85, Caitlin Krengel finished the race with a time of 1:12.72.
In the 200 butterfly, Kelly McCullough finished with a time of 2:18.29. She took the third-place spot. April Mangrich (2:21.19) and Tori Ward (2:25.69) took fifth and sixth, respectively.
Finishing in third and fourth for the 50 freestyle was Maggie Rickert (25.23). Rickert also took third in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1:01.30.
MVC diver of the week, Lauren Nelson took seventh in the 1-meter dive, with 196.30 points, and fifth in the 3-meter dives, with 195.30 points.
Finishing in a third place for the 100 freestyle was Stephanie Frederick. She finished with a time of 54.70.
Abby Girard took third in the 200 backstroke. She clocked in with a time of 2:13.13. Shortly behind was Kelly McCullough with a 2:14.63 finish.
Josie Itzen took the runner-up spot in the 200 breaststroke, finishing at 2:33.08. Sarah Hedeen took third with a time of 2:35.49. Itzen finished in fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.67.
The Panthers took the second through fifth place spots in the 500 freestyle. Coming in at the runner-up spot was Shea Brunsvold and Stephanie Yattoni finishing with times of 5:23.32, 5:24.40 and 5:25.32, respectively.
The Panthers will continue action Jan. 29, at Minnesota State, Mankato. The meet is set for a 6 p.m. start at the Highland Center Pool.
