Panthers Take Runner-Up Spot in Drake Relays 4x800 Meter Relay Race

DES MOINES, Iowa - The men's 4x800 meter relay race came down to the wire Friday evening at the 100th running of the Drake Relays as Wisconsin thwarted the Panthers attempt at a third consecutive Drake Relays title. The Panthers' Tyler Mulder fell just shy of Wisconsin's Zach Beth at the finish as the Badgers finished in 7:21.10, just ahead of UNI in 7:21.45.
Mulder clocked in with a spit of 1:47.48 to close the gap, but Beth held on for the through the final 100 meters to take the title.
The Panthers ran a trio of freshman prior to Mulder's anchor leg, with Andrew Perkins who clocked in with a split time of 1:52.13. Iowa City, Iowa native Brady Fritz clocked in an 800 meter split of 1:50.66, two seconds faster than his previous season-best in the 800 meters.
Phil Hanson clinched third place in the pole vault competition, matching his career outdoor-best, vaulting 17-00.25. Teammate Mike Beese finished in a tie for forth place, also matching his career outdoor-best of 17-00.75. Hanson earned third place over Beese due to number of successful attempts. Fellow Panther Sam Kranz cleared a season-best 16-00.75 to finish 16th.
In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the quartet of Dennis Hammel, Cory Goos and Terrance Reid recorded the third fastest preliminary time in the field, qualifying for the final round with a time of 3:09.65. Ohio State recorded the top preliminary time of 3:08:51.
Marcin Kazubowski finished in sixth place in the javelin, heaving 202-03, his second-best throw of the season.
In the men's 110 hurdles Wojiech Jurkowski finished in 15.34 followed by Scott Lynn in a time of 15.78, though neither qualified for the final round of competition.
The quartet of Dani Stipe, Caedryn Schrunk finished in tenth place in the women's distance medley relay, clocking in at 11:46.87. Their time puts them third on the all-time UNI best list.
Dani Stipe, Ellen Kindelsperger and Holli Hosch finished in a season-best 3:46.78, but did not qualify for the final round of the 4x400 meter relay.
Competition at the 100th running of the Drake Relays begins again tomorrow morning with the women's shuttle hurdle relay taking off at 8:20 a.m.
