AVON, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa women's golf team captured its first tournament win of the season by taking over the top spot at the Butler Spring Invite held at Prestwick Country Club. Junior Ann Arnason led the Panther charge by earning medalist honors and winning the tournament by three shots.
Arnason fired a two-over par (74) in the second round to take top individual honors. Arnason's two-day total of 154 strokes allowed her to edge out Detroit's Alainna Stefan by three strokes. The course played to a par-72 and was listed at 6,090 yards.
"Ann really played well and managed her game really well," UNI head coach John Bermel said. "She doubled the fourth to last hole, but she kept it together and that was pretty impressive."
Bermel said he was happy with how his squad responded after hitting some hard times on the back side as they tried to close out the team victory. UNI shot 333 on Monday, but came back with a round of 312 on Tuesday to win by seven shots over Dayton.
"We needed a confidence boost and we got it," Bermel said. "We made the turn with our four best players shooting 35, 37, 37 and 38. We were three over par at the turn with our four best players. But then we had some unfortunate things happen on the back side, but the nice part about it is that we still got it done. I can't forget that it's just our second tournament of the spring. I thought on Sunday during our practice round that we were hitting the ball real well. Then today we put it together and we were hitting it really well."
Kim Weber finished fourth overall and shot a four-over par round (76). Weber was cruising before hitting a rough patch down the stretch that saw her finish triple bogey, bogey and bogey or she could have challenged medalist honors.
Heather Frye finished in a tie for 12th with a second round 83, after making the turn at 37. Blair Bonner bounced back from a first round 90 with a solid 79 in the closing round.
The Panthers will be in action again March 30-31 at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Golf Classic in Hot Springs Village, Ark.
