Panthers Finish 14th in Distance Medley Relay, Mulder Qualifies for Finals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Northern Iowa men's distance medley relay finished in 14th place at the NCAA Indoor Championships hosted by Texas A&M Friday evening. Senior Tyler Mulder also competed for the Panthers, advancing to the finals in the 800 meter race.
The distance medley relay the crew of Andrew Perkins, Cory Goos, Beau Dielschneider and Thibault Vandenabeele clocked in at 9:39.37 for 14th place, finishing just behind Auburn who clocked in at 9:39.11 for 13th place. Oregon took the top spot in the event with a time of 9:29.59.
Perkins opened the race for the Panthers, finishing the 1200 meters in 2:56.88. Three-time All-American Goos took the baton from Perkins and finished the 400 meter leg in 47.08. Dielschneider ran the 800 meter leg for the Panthers, clocking in at a season-best 1:50.64. Vandenabeele anchored the race, finishing the mile leg in 4:04.60.
"I'm really proud of all the guys," head coach Travis Geopfert said. "They battled hard and just gave an awesome effort."
Reigning NCAA 800 meter champion Tyler Mulder took the first step in defending his title Friday evening, qualifying for the finals in the 800 with a time of 1:49.61. Mulder finished second in his heat, coming in behind Oregon's Andrew Wheating. Texas' Tevan Everett qualified first, clocking in at 1:49.04.

NOTES:
Of the Panthers five runners competing at the NCAA Championships this weekend four return to the squad next season. Tyler Mulder is the lone senior representing the Panthers in College Station this weekend.
Of the four runners representing the Panthers in the distance medley relay, three are freshman. Andrew Perkins, Beau Dielschneider and Thibault Vandenabeele each have three years of eligibility left on the track for the Panthers.
