GREEN BAY, Wis. - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team suffered an 82-69 defeat at the hands of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward Kim Wypiszynski led the Panther scoring attack, racking up 19 points off 4-for-4 shooting from the field and 10-for-12 shooting from the charity stripe. K.K. Armstrong and Lizzie Boeck also scored in double-figures with Armstrong scoring 12 points and Boeck chipping in ten points.
Green Bay jumped out to an early lead using a 15-0 run to take a 24-7 lead with just over eleven minutes left in the first half. Wypiszynski ended the Panther scoring drought with six points off three trips to the free throw line. The senior then capitalized off a Phoenix turnover to score.
However, Green Bay would get warm from behind the arc, draining back-to-back treys to extend the lead to 42-24 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.
Green Bay's hot shooting would continue the rest of the half as the Phoenix connected on 63 percent of their shots, including 53 from behind the arc and headed into the halftime break with a 55-31 lead.
The Panthers chipped the Phoenix lead to 14 in the second half when Wypiszynski drained a three from the top of the key with just over seven minutes left in the game. A jumper by UW-Green Bay's Heather Golden followed by a deep three from Kayla Tetschlag thwarted the Panthers growing momentum and gave the Phoenix a 19 point lead with just over five minutes to play.
UNI held UW-Green Bay to zero points in the paint in the second half and outscored the Phoenix 24-16 in the paint for the duration of the game. The UNI bench also provided a spark for the Panther offense, scoring 29 of the Panthers 69 points.
UNI (2-5) returns to action Dec. 10 hosting UW-Green Bay. Tipoff from the McLeod Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
