UNI Claims 68-59 Win Over UW-Milwaukee

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team held UW-Milwaukee scoreless in the final four minutes of action and scored the game's final nine points to claim a 68-59 win Thursday night in the McLeod Center. Jacqui Kalin led UNI with 25 points and Lizzie Boeck came off the bench to tally 20.
Both Kalin and Boeck notched season highs in the contest. Kalin was 7-of-17 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Boeck was 8-of-10 from the floor, and she also finished with a team-high seven rebounds. Erin Brocka notched six rebounds for UNI (3-5) and Kalin led the Panthers with five assists.
UW-Milwaukee (4-4) was led by Lindsay Laur's 18 points, and Jodie McClain added 17. Sami Tucker led UWM with 10 rebounds.
Both teams were hot from the field early in the contest, with each team shooting better than 60 percent through the first seven minutes on the way to a 15-15 tie at 13:02. UNI held a 29-28 edge with 4:26 left in the half and then rattled off eight unanswered points to take a 37-28 lead with 1:49 on the clock.
UW-Milwaukee scored the next four points to cut the UNI lead to five, 37-32, but Boeck knocked down a three on the Panthers' last possession of the half to send UNI into the break in front, 40-32.
UNI scored first in the second half to open a double-digit lead, 42-37. UWM scored the next seven points, however, trimming the UNI advantage to 42-39 with 14:16 to play. Danielle Wubbens knocked down a three from the right wing to end the UWM run and double the UNI lead, 45-39 with 13:50 remaining.
Lindsay Laur matched a pair of Boeck free throws to keep the difference at six. Nicole Clausen put the Panthers in front 50-41 with a three at 12:16, but Milwaukee's Jodie McClain answered 20 seconds later to bring the score to 50-44.
McClain made the first of two free throws, and Laur collected the offensive rebound on the second try. Laur scored on a layup to narrow the gap to 50-47 with 9:15 remaining.
Boeck scored on a jumper in the lane to bring it back to a two-possession contest, 52-47. The UNI defense forced a shot-clock violation on the other end, and the offense capitalized when Kalin connected for three from the top of the key to extend the UNI lead to 55-47.
Milwaukee's Sami Tucker converted a pair of free throws at 6:53, but Kalin answered with a mid-range jumper to keep the UNI advantage at eight, 57-49.
Jennilee Klomstad made a layup, and Laur notched a pair of threes to cap an 8-0 run and tie the game, 57-57, with 4:45 to play.
Kalin scored on the Panthers' next possession to return the lead to UNI, but Tucker drained a pair of free throws to tie the game at 59-59.
On UNI's ensuing possession, Clausen knocked down a three from the left wing, giving UNI a 62-59 edge with four minutes remaining.
Neither team scored until Kalin sank a pair of free throws with 1:46 on the clock to extend the UNI lead to 64-59.
UNI held Milwaukee to just one shot attempt on each of their next two possessions, with Brocka and Wubbens each securing defensive rebounds. UWM sent Kalin to the stripe twice inside the final minute, and the sophomore connected on all four attempts to bring the final score to 68-59 in favor of UNI.
UNI finished 25-of-59 (42.4 percent) from the floor, including 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from behind the arc. The Panthers were 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from the free-throw line.
UW-Milwaukee shot 22-of-47 (46.8 percent) from the field, including 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers were 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
UNI held a slight edge on the glass, outrebounding UWM 35-32. UNI turned 22 UWM turnovers into 24 points, while Milwaukee converted 16 UNI turnovers into 12 points.
UNI returns to action on Sunday when it hosts South Dakota at 3:05 p.m.
