UNI Rolls to 80-60 Win Over South Dakota

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball scored a season-high 80 points to claim an 80-60 win over South Dakota Sunday afternoon in the McLeod Center. Kim Wypiszynski led UNI with a season-high 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Jacqui Kalin finished with 14 points and five assists for UNI (4-5), and Rachel Madrigal scored 10, all in the first half, for the Panthers. Erin Brocka notched six points and six rebounds for UNI.
Annie Roche led USD (3-4) with 20 points and Abby Kinder tallied 13. Kara Iverson notched 10 points for the Coyotes.
South Dakota scored first, but the Panthers responded to score the next 12 points, including a pair of threes from Madrigal, building a 12-2 lead with 14:21 on the clock. USD pulled within four with a pair of threes, but Madrigal connected on a layup and K.K. Armstrong drained a three to put UNI in front 17-8 with 10:40 left in the first half.
USD answered with five straight points to cut the UNI advantage to four, but Kim Wypiszynski found Erin Brocka on the block, and the basket extended UNI's lead to 19-13.
Annie Roche and Abby Kinder knocked down threes on consecutive trips to tie the game, 19-19, with 7:37 on the clock.
Wypiszynski made one of two free throws to give the Panthers a one point edge, but USD scored the next four points to take a 23-20 lead. Wypiszynski hit a three from the right wing to tie the game, and she converted a pair of free throws to put UNI back in front, 25-23 at 4:02.
Teresa Case hit a jumper at 3:04 to tie the game for the third time. Madrigal scored to put the Panthers back in front. That was the beginning of an 11-2 UNI run to end the half, sending UNI into the break in front, 36-27.
Clausen scored on the block to extend the Panther advantage to 38-27, and Brocka followed a USD free throw with a bucket that brought the score to 40-28 in favor of the Panthers. UNI stretched its lead to 42-28, but USD scored five straight points to cut the UNI lead to single digits, 42-33, with 14:53 remaining.
Lizzie Boeck connected on a pair of free throws to return the Panther lead to double digits, but a three from Roche and a pair of free throws from Jasmine Mosley pulled the Coyotes within six, 44-38 with 13:04 on the clock.
Wypiszynski scored as she was fouled. Her free-throw attempt rimmed out, but UNI collected the offensive rebound. Boeck scored on the right block to finish the four-point possession for the Panthers. On the Panthers' next trip, Kalin scored in the paint to stretch the UNI lead to 50-38 with 11:50 to play. Wypiszynski and Kalin each made a pair of free throws to cap a 10-0 Panther run that gave UNI a 54-38 lead with 10:46 remaining.
The Panthers led by as many as 22 points and held at least a 12-point advantage the rest of the way.
UNI shot 24-of-53 (45.3 percent) from the floor in the game, including 7-of-21 (33.3 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers connected on 25-of-31 (80.6 percent) of their free-throw attempts.
The Coyotes finished 21-of-47 (44.7 percent) from the floor, including 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from behind the arc. USD shot 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Panthers outrebounded USD, 40-23. Thirteen of UNI's rebounds came on the offensive end, resulting in 18 second-chance points. UNI turned 19 USD turnovers into 23 points, while the Coyotes converted UNI's 14 turnovers into 13 points.
UNI returns to action on Sunday, December 20 when they play at in-state rival Iowa State.
