AMES, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team cut a 19-point deficit to 10 but was unable to come all the way back in a 76-51 loss at Iowa State Sunday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Panthers were plagued by cold shooting in the contest, connecting on a season-low 30 percent of their attempts and scoring a season-low 51 points.
Jacqui Kalin and Lizzie Boeck each scored 14 points to lead the Panthers (4-6). Erin Brocka led UNI with seven rebounds and four assists.
Alison Lacey led the Cyclones (8-1) with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
The Panthers started the game shooting just 1-of-7 from the floor, allowing the Cyclones to build an early 9-2 lead. UNI pulled within four, 14-10, but Iowa State scored five straight points to build a 19-10 advantage.
UNI narrowed the gap to five, 21-16, but ISU rattled off nine straight points to take a 30-16 lead with four minutes left in the first half.
Nicole Clausen ended the ISU run with a three from the top of the key, but the Cyclones notched the game's next eight points to extend their lead to 38-19 with five seconds left in the half. Kim Wypiszynski scored on a layup at the buzzer to make the halftime score 38-21.
Jacqui Kalin hit a layup on UNI's first possession of the second half, and she knocked down a three on the Panthers' next trip to cut the ISU advantage to 38-26. She hit a pull-up jumper on a fast break at 17:30 to make it a 10-point contest, 38-28.
Chelsea Poppens scored to end the UNI run, but Wypiszynski connected on a pair of free throws to keep the difference at 10, 40-30 with 16:45 to play.
The Cyclones scored the next 11 points to stretch their lead to 51-30 with 13:15 on the clock.
Boeck tallied an old-fashioned three-point play to end the ISU run, and Erin Brocka found Clausen cutting to the basket for a layup that made the score 51-35 with 10:55 to play.
UNI was able to cut the Cyclone lead to 15, 56-41 with 8:21 to play, but ISU scored the next 14 points to take a 70-41 lead with 4:30 remaining.
Clausen and Kalin hit threes on back-to-back trips to end the Iowa State run, but it was too little, too late as the Panthers were never able to cut the ISU lead to fewer than 23 points on the way to the loss.
UNI finished 19-of-63 (30.2 percent) from the floor, including an 8-of-38 (21.1 percent) effort in the first half. UNI finished 5-of-25 (20 percent) from three-point range and 8-of-9 (88.9 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Cyclones shot 29-of-49 (59.2 percent) from the floor, including 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from behind the arc. ISU finished 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Cyclones outrebounded UNI, 41-26. UNI committed a season-low 10 turnovers to Iowa State's 18.
The Panthers return to action on Dec. 28 when they play at South Dakota State in their final non-conference game of the season.
