UNI Invitational Wraps Up, Panthers Claim Three Provisional NCAA Qualifiers

Cedar Falls - In the final day of the UNI Invitational, the University of Northern Iowa track and field teams claimed three provisional NCAA qualifiers. Sophomore Raven Cepeda (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) earned 5,470 points in the heptathlon to provisionally qualify, as well as take the first-place spot in the event. Sophomore teammate Andre Poljanec (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Ljubljana) provisionally qualified in the pole vault by placing first with a 17-7 height. Rachel Jansen (Orange City, Iowa/MOC-Floyd Valley) set a new UNI school record and provisionally qualified with a mark of 51-0 1/4 in the shot put.
Cepeda placed first in two out of three of today's heptathlon events, running an 8.33 time in the 60-meter hurdles and reaching a 15-7 height in the pole vault. He was the runner up in the 1000 meters, finishing in 2:49.58.
Freshman Mat Clark (Ames, Iowa/Ames) finished the heptathlon in second place with 4,991 points. In today's events, he placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.37), second in the pole vault (13-7 ¼) and first in the 1000 meters (2:39.40).
Also for the Panther men in the pole vault, junior Jarno Kivioja (Porvoo, Finaldn/Makelanrinteen Lukio) captured second place, clearing 16-6 ¾. Senior Patrick Hunter (Racine, Wis./Washington Park) placed first in the 60 meters, clocking in at 6.80, while senior teammate Jamie Goodwin (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport/Akron) was in close pursuit, placing second in 6.86. Senior Samuel Dodoo (Accra, Ghana) captured the third-place spot in 6.93. The UNI 4x400 relay team `A' earned first place in 3:16.61.
Freshman Greg Offerman (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) was the runner-up in the 400 meters, clocking in at 50.69. In the 800 meters, freshman Tyler Mulder (Orange City, Iowa/Unity Christian) placed third in 1:54.33. Junior Terrence Reid (Davenport, Iowa/Central) placed fourth in 22.06.
Other top performers on the men's side included junior Kyle Smith (Toronto, Canada/Birchmount Park) who placed first in the 1000 meters with a 2:30.34 time and sophomore Andy Schon (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon), placing second in the 3000 meters with his 8:56.99 time.
On the UNI women's side, sophomore Sarah Johnston (Packwood, Iowa/Pekin) finished first, finishing in 5:10.81. Close behind was freshman Whitney Johnson (Adel, Iowa/ADM), capturing second place with her time of 5:11.17.
In the 400 meters, junior Moa Westman (Norrtalje, Sweden/Sollentuna) was the champion of the 800 meters, finishing in 2:13.88. The Panther women also had the top four performers in the 3000, with junior Caedryn Schrunk (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake), who clocked in at 10:34.74, and it was sophomore Staci ruebel (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) that took the fourth-place spot in 10:39.05.
Next on the schedule, the Panthers host the UNI Classic Friday (Feb. 3) in the UNI-Dome.
